Heroin chic may be out but the Opium Experience is here.

Yves Saint Laurent’s new concept store opened last weekend at South Coast Plaza.

Its 2,200-square-foot space is on the second level next to St. John.

South Coast Plaza has the first YSL boutique in the United States to feature this new concept, which debuted in February in Paris. It is also now at the YSL in Houston.

Called the Opium Experience, the theme was designed by Creative Director Stefano Pilati and includes red lacquer walls and floor-to-ceiling windows.

“The mix of materials, precious and otherwise, illustrates important Yves Saint Laurent dualities: rough sophistication, industrial elegance, the transformation of the commonplace into the extraordinary,” according to a press release.

Opium has been part of the YSL brand since a fragrance by that name was launched in 1977.

The merchandise has not changed but handbags are now prominently displayed in the entry.

One of YSL’s featured bags is the Muse Two, which runs from $1,998 and up. The ostrich version (right) costs $9,900.

YSL’s former space next to Gucci on the second level will next house Prada.
